Austria

Historic Postal Routes Thurn and Taxis

With its theme of historic postal routes, this year’s EUROPA stamp is dedicated to a topic with a strong philatelic focus. For this, Austrian Post has chosen a historic representation of Palais Fugger in lnnsbruck.

Emperor Maximilian I established the modern postal service in around 1490: he set up a regular courier service from his residential city of lnnsbruck to the more distant parts of his empire, entrusting management of this service to the Taxis family, subsequently Thurn und Taxis. The counts of Thurn und Taxis acquired Palais Fugger in lnnsbruck’s Maria-Theresien-Strasse in 1784. It had been built by Hans Otto Fugger to plans by the court architect Johann Martin Gumpp after 1ó79. The counts used the palace not only as their place of residence, but also as a post station

Malta

The first stamp features a map of the Mediterranean Sea with Malta, Sicily and Italy at its core. Being an island, key naval routes are highlighted such as the Malta/ Pozzallo, Malta/ Messina and Malta/Naples routes. A vessel known as l-Ixprunara or ‘speronara’ feature on the left-hand side. The second stamp bears a portrait of Francisco de Tassis who was a 15th century pioneer of the postal service in Europe and tasked by Emperor Maximillian I to reform the courier system in Burgundy and the Netherlands. In time, this new postal system grew as deTassis founded new postal stations in major European cities, thereby guaranteeing a complete service over the years. De Tassis commercialised this service by establishing fast and stable connections which evolved into the globalised postal network service we have today. His portrait portrays him as a successful entrepreneur complete with symbols of his role and standing in society – a letter, coins and a cylindrical postal container.
